Getting Adjusted Week 2

So, this is my first time blogging so please forgive me, not quite sure what I am doing. Guess I’ll just write! I thought is would be a great way for me to keep in touch with everyone and give you a synopsis of what our life is like in Geneva Switzerland! So, it has now almost been 3 weeks (WOW!) since we crossed the big pond! I must say that life is much calmer here since we arrived in comparison to the last few weeks of living in the states. I no longer have to think about everything in terms of is this staying? Going on the boat? Going to storage? Donation? Man did we have a lot of stuff! Now my life consists of the usual grocery shopping, laundry, cleaning, packing lunches but also I get to ask myself daily, so where am I going to explore today? That is really fun! Everyday we leave Alex off for school and Auston and I get to jump in the car and explore a new part of the city. He doesn't love it as much as I but at least I have some company! So, in a matter of a couple of weeks, I truly feel like I know my way around this place, at least somewhat!
The first week was full of getting used to our new apartment (which has been great by the way), finding a rental car that we could use for 1-2 months until our car comes in (we ordered it last week), setting up our internet and phone service, getting a cell phone, opening a bank account, finding the local grocery store and all of the other typical things you do when you move.
Alex also started his new school and is now in his second week. So far, so good. It is an International school and he is in the English program. 15 kids in his class from all over the world! He has so far befriended two little boys, one from Ireland and the other from Holland. His teacher is also British. English accents flying all over the place. He is getting very used to it! The school is set up as a campus so he has a period of French (every day for one hour), reading, lunch and gym all in different buildings. The school day is long, 8:30-15:30 (have to get used to this military time) so he has two breaks and 1 recess daily. During these times they play outside regardless of weather. They really don't seem to mind the cold here, children never do anyhow as much as the adults...which is why I am certain recess in the states is always inside! They are organizing a class trip in a few weeks to go dog sledding. We thought this was so funny! Hopefully I can join in!
Right now we are deciding on whether or now to enroll Auston in the same International school. He really would love to go to school and it would be a great way to meet friends. We would have him go part-time and enroll him in the Francophone program. Although the teacher may know English, the teacher would only speak French throughout the entire day. We really want to immerse the kids and it is much easier to do at age 4 as opposed to age 6. Plus, we are finding an hour a day really isn't enough.
OK, well I could write forever but might as well stop here for my first entry. Write more soon!

  1. Ali, I love your blog! Life sounds so exciting for you. I know you are just going through the normal steps of taking care of a family every day, which include things like laundry and dinner and errands, but boy does it sound exotic. What a wonderful opportunity for your family to be together, such a great chance for your sons to learn there is a world outside of the U.S. Thank you for letting me know you are out there...I'll be sure to check in with you often.
