Trip to Gruyere

We headed out for a day trip to Gruyere a few weeks back. Gruyere is the home of the Nestle Chocolate factory and of course, Gruyere cheese. Gruyere cheese is the most common cheese used to make fondue in Switzerland. The actual old town is a small medieval village with an awesome castle that is unfortunately closed during the winter. We were able to walk through this picturesque little village and explore the outside of the castle. We topped off the night with a traditional dinner of Raclette Gruyere Cheese Fondue. This is a super yummy dish that involves placing a block of Gruyere cheese under a heater and scraping the melted cheese off onto a plate of potatoes and various types of meats. So healthy.

Outside the town of Gruyere is a ski resort that offers cable car rides up to the top of the mountain. It was an overcast, foggy day. Visibility was less than 10 feet. I could not believe that people were skiing in these conditions. Well, the top of the mountain was a different story. It was amazing to take this ride up through the clouds and into a clear sunny ski. We were above the clouds, relaxing at a cafe, watching the most experienced skiers dive off the side of this mountain. These were unmarked trails meant only for the best of the best. We got some awesome pictures of this site.
